Analysis of Opening Sequences of Two Thrillers

We have been set a task to analyse two opening sequences to two thrillers,
My second opening sequence is The Dark Knight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OYBEquZ_j0&feature=related

Mise En Scene - the background at the start of this is in the city, you can see one man holding a mask in one of his hands, the costume he has on is a dark suit and holding a briefcase in one hand and a mask in the other. This might show he is a business man and is looking for a place to rob because of the mask to cover his face. The background is in the city and it is daylight, the city has cars going past, which means it’s a busy city. this adds to the genre because if the city is busy and the man has got a mask in his hand, this might be rather suspicious of what he is going to do, this adds to the genre as the viewers will become tense and want to know what happens next and whether they get caught. Later on in the opening sequence you get to see the characters with masks on actually running into the bank with people outside on their phones, this will be suspicious as they are going to do a robbery. The mise en scene inside the bank was very light and plain because it was a bank, there were rather a lot of people in the bank and there were workers and customers. The Mise En Scene can add to the genre by making things become tenser especially if its day light and people are watching in a busy city, this might then make the viewer wonder whether they are going to get caught because of the people in the city phoning the police.

Camera - The camera in this opening scene is used well to add suspense and getting the audience to wonder what is going to happen next. Some of the camera shots like the one where you can see the man in the suit standing there waiting for the car to arrive with a mask in his hand, is a low angle shot and might make him dominant as the camera is lower than his head, this means that he might be taller and stronger than others. this adds to the genre as the audience will be wondering what will happen as he has a mask in his hand and looks like he is going to cause trouble. The fast running shot when they are entering the bank allows the viewer to see what it’s like being one of them and following them into the bank, this adds to the genre as it is scary and you want to know what is going to happen in the bank. This shot also allows you to view all of the bank. The long shot of the guy in the mask pulling the male bank worker over the desk allows the audience to view the whole bank and who else is in the bank. This adds to the genre as you are wondering what is going to happen to all the other people that are in the bank. the two shot where one of the characters in the mask are stopping the alarm, allows you to see what is happening behind him and what the other character in the mask is going to do to him, this adds to the genre as you are left wondering why he had killed him.

Editing - The fast straight cuts between each of the characters and what they are doing either inside the bank, on top of the bank or trying to open the safe. The fast cuts are used so it seems faster and there is much more tension going on and you left want to watch what is happening in each of the other parts of the bank. This adds to the genre as you are tense as your are watching these characters steal a bank while killing each other so they can gain more of the money and not share it.

Sound - the sound in the background builds suspense while they are taking over the bank, this adds to the genre as they are committing a crime. The dialogue between each of the characters is usually aimed around the money and the joker, this is because the joker is the leader and all of the characters want a share of the money so they decide to kill each other so they can gain a larger amount of the money. This adds to the genre as you know it will be a thriller because of the murders and the amount of tension there is in each scene/shot.

Analysis of Opening Sequences of Two Thrillers

we have been set a task to analyse two opening sequences to two thrillers,

My first opening sequence is going to be Pulp Fiction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwusCDRiDwE

Camera –
The Two shot of the conversation in this clip allows the viewer to see the clothes they are wearing, what the cafe is like and kind of where it is located. You can also see the movement of the characters while they are talking to each other. This point allows the viewer to wonder whether it is going to be a thriller or not, because it’s a road side cafe, and it’s the day-time, they also don't look like they would make a robbery as they are dressed in normal clothes, they also aren't talking secretively as they are speaking loudly and relaxing. this makes the viewer wonder what is going to happen because it is rather suspicious as if they were going to commit a robbery they don't have any masks or anything to hind their identity or DNA, this might make the viewer tensed and wondering what will happen next.

The medium long shot of the two characters sitting down allows the viewer to see their body posture and movement, it also allows the viewer to see the clothes they are wearing. this camera shot helps the genre to be a thriller as the viewer will be wondering what is going to happen next as they don't look suspicious and they are wearing normal clothes, so if they did do a robbery there would be a larger chance of them getting caught as they aren't hidden in anyway.

The close up of the innocent worker shows the innocence in her face because she asks them a question and smiles, this might make the viewer wondering what they are going to do next and whether they could harm or shock a person like that. This will add to the thriller genre as the viewer will notice she is innocent and might make the viewer thinking why they are going to commit a robbery on an innocent cafe.

The shot/reverse shot of the woman and the man’s conversation shows you that the women might not agree on everything the man is saying as you can see her face expressions and the silence. But, he is the dominant one and she follows his orders. After the shot of the woman it flicks back to a longer take of the man talking and then switches back to the woman asking a question. This might mean that she wants to know what is going to happen as she wants a better understanding of it so it might be less risky. This adds to the genre as they are agreeing on committing a robbery and she has been forced/convinced to commit the robbery with the male.

Mise En Scene –
The costumes the main two characters are wearing are normal and plain, this makes the viewer thinks that they are two normal people just eating and having a drink. This adds to the thriller genre as the viewer might be wondering why they are going to do something when dressed like that and thinking about whether they are going to get caught later on because they haven't covered up their faces.

The background is just normal streets, as you can see cars going past. this makes the viewer think that they are just going to have a drink and talk about something, but this adds to the genre because they are in daylight and in a public place where other people are around which makes it more noticeable and more likely that they are going to get caught after the robbery.

The shop is a cafe and there are other people in there, the time of day is daylight and you can see clearly. This will add to the genre because you will be thinking whether they will get caught because it’s easy and clear to see their faces, so there is a higher possibility of getting caught and this makes the viewer become tense and wanting to know what happens later on in the film.

Editing –
Most of the editing are straight cuts as this won't add any suspense or tension to the film. This adds to the genre because it’s not a horror and isn't trying to be scary, it just wants the viewers to be tense and to wonder what is going to happen next.

There is a jump cut when the woman interrupts and asks if they want more coffee, this interrupts their conversation they were having so they start on a new topic or jump to the most important part of the conversation. This adds to the genre as it could mean she was listening in on the conversation and knew what they were planning to do.

Sound –
The dialogue between them involves talking about different types of robberies and how they did them. The way they are talking is loud because they might not care about other people hearing even thought it should be secretive as its illegal. This adds to the genre as the viewer might be thinking about whether other people can hear what they are saying, this could possibly have them sent to jail if someone listened to their conversation.

When the male character slams the gun on the table, the sound is very loud and other people in the cafe might be suspicious. this adds to the genre because the viewer might be wondering whether other people in the cafe could hear that and whether they were going to get caught because there was a gun lying on the table.

When both of the characters are talking about robbing the cafe, they both move in closer and talk quieter so other people cannot hear what they are discussing. This adds to the genre as you know they are going to do something bad otherwise they wouldn't have started whispering to each other.

Finishing Preliminary Task

Lesson 5, 2/2/2010

My group and I started off this lesson by opening our video and watching and listening to it, this helped us have an understanding of the improvements we need to make. We agreed on deleting one of the edits because we had added to many into the video, we then decided to record some footsteps, so we could add the audio into apart of our video. after we had filmed some footsteps, we then added the audio only into our video and slowed them down. After we had completed the edit of our task we then had to export the file in an AVI format, this is because we need to send a copy off to the examiner and to put it on youtube, putting the clip into AVI allows the viewers or the teacher to add it onto a DVD, put it onto youtube and to just watch it at a computer.
